![]() February 'Ohana Alert! 2003 Reinstatement of the death penalty, restrictions on access to safe and legal abortion, erosion of due process protections when charged with a serious crime, alternative sentencing for drug offenses, expansion of electronic surveillance - these are some of the issues up for discussion and decision this session. With new dynamics at work in the legislature, it is uncertain how these concerns will be addressed and maneuvered but the ACLU must be prepared and vigilant. Volunteers leading our program this year are Jory Watland (chair) and Pam Lichty, Tom Gill, Andrea Low and Bill Harrison. ACLU supporters are also a key part of our advocacy. When volunteers or staff testify at committee hearings or meet with politicians, we are representing the organization as a whole but legislators are also interested in hearing from individual constituents. You could have an impact. How? 1) We would like to build a network of folks who would be willing to provide us with written testimony in advance of hearings. 2) We also need people to email/call on very short notice who can make a call(s) to key legislators about a particular bill or submit brief testimony by fax/email when hearings occur. Staff will enthusiastically be available to assist at any level of involvement. The email addresses or phone numbers that you provide would be used for this purpose only. Help us make every political contact count.
