ACLU Asks Court to Require Immediate Action to Stop Harassment of Gay and Transgender Youth at Hawai'i Juvenile Detention Facility (10/04/2005)
Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union has asked a federal court to order the state's juvenile detention facility to take immediate action to halt harassment and abuse of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender wards. The ACLU's motion for a preliminary injunction aims to force Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility (HYCF) to implement policies and training to protect LGBT youth in its care.

Local Civil Liberties Advocates to be Recognized at Special Awards Ceremony
Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Hawai‘i celebrates 40 years of protecting the Bill of Rights statewide with a gala fundraising event on September 25 featuring a keynote address by renowned author, security critic and commentator Bruce Schneier. Three awards will be also presented to local individuals for outstanding work to promote civil liberties awareness. The event will occur at the Renaissance Waikiki Ilikai Hotel beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of three young people who say they have been abused and harassed because of their sexual orientation and gender identity while at the state’s juvenile detention facility.

Honolulu — The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii (ACLU) announced today that it has expanded its federal civil rights class action lawsuit concerning Hawaii’s residency hiring requirement. The ACLU is representing two Florida residents who tried to apply for City and County of Honolulu and State jobs, including a retired military officer who relocated to Oahu.
