Volunteer Your Time

Volunteers at the ACLU of Hawaii. Volunteers work in a variety of areas at the ACLU of Hawaii. As a non-profit civil liberties advocacy organization, we rely on the time, talent and expertise of our volunteers to accomplish the enormous volume of work that we do.

Intake/Complaint Counselors - A challenging volunteer position awaits you as an ACLU of Hawaii Intake/Complaint Counselor! As counselor, you will staff the ACLU of Hawaii complaint lines (open from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday), under the supervision of the Legal Director. Due to the training involved, the position requires at least a 4-month commitment to work one day a week.

Your Main Duties Are To:
  • Analyze and screen calls for complaints which contain civil liberties issues and present them to the Legal Director;
  • Serve as ACLU representatives to the general public;
  • Provide information and referral services to callers.
Requirements are:
  • Strong commitment to the protection of civil liberties and a desire to help those who contact the ACLU.
  • Ability to work well with the public and good telephone skills.
  • Knowledge of basic counseling and interviewing techniques.
  • Knowledge of current ACLU polices, issues, and cases.
