ACLU of Hawaii Hails Supreme Court Decision Affirming Parents’ Rights to Raise Their Children (12/19/2007)
Honolulu - Hailing the decision as a victory for parents and families, the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii (ACLU) announced today that the Hawaii Supreme Court has struck down a law that gave the family courts overly broad power to award a grandparent visitation rights over the objections of a parent. On December 13, 2007, in Doe v. Doe, the Supreme Court upheld the Family Court’s conclusion that Hawaii’s grandparent visitation statute is unconstitutional as written because it unnecessarily interferes with a parent’s fundamental right to raise her child.

ACLU of Hawai'i Celebrates National Bill of Rights Day!
Copies of the Bill of Rights Available Free to Public, Friday 12/14/07

Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i is offering free copies of the Bill of Rights in celebration of Bill of Rights Day, marking the 216th anniversary of its ratification (since Bill of Rights Day falls on a Saturday this year, the ACLU will offer free copies to the public Friday, December 14).

ACLU of Hawaii Welcomes New Senior Staff Attorney Daniel M. Gluck (12/04/2007)
Honolulu - The ACLU of Hawaii is pleased to announce that it has selected Daniel M. Gluck as its new Senior Staff Attorney. Gluck joins the ACLU of Hawaii legal team, which is currently staffed by Lois Perrin, Legal Director, and Laurie A. Temple, Staff Attorney.

Gov. Lingle Refuses to Retract Teacher Drug Testing Policy - Calling the Policy Unconstitutional, ACLU Announces Plans to File Suit Imminently (11/15/2007)
Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union condemned Governor Lingle's refusal to retract a policy that will subject as many as 13,500 public school employees, including teachers, librarians and many administrative workers to random drug testing. Saying that the drug testing program violates adults' constitutional right to privacy and is ineffective and costly, the ACLU announced today that it will file suit imminently in federal court.

Court Asked to Halt Enforcement of Laws and Policies That Illegally Deny Homeless Children Equal Access to Education (11/06/2007)
Honolulu - In advancing their class action lawsuit, Lawyers for Equal Justice (LEJ) and the ACLU of Hawaii (ACLU) today are filing a motion for preliminary injunction in federal court seeking an order that would immediately halt State officials (State) from enforcing laws and policies that block access by homeless children to public education in violation of federal law.

Two-day Series of ACLU Events Includes Hilo Lecture on Guantánamo, Honoka'a Public Meeting (10/25/2007)
Honolulu - A Hawaii attorney representing a detainee at Guantánamo Bay prison will be the featured speaker for the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii ("ACLU of Hawaii").  Edmund Burke continues his statewide lecture tour on "Guantánamo and the Law" on Saturday November 10th at UH Hilo Campus Center 301 from 4:00PM to 5:30PM.

ACLU of Hawai'i Hosts Civil Liberties Conference Sat.,11/3/07 (10/17/2007)
Honolulu - Aiming to broaden public awareness and stimulate grassroots activism, the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i (ACLU) presents its first-ever Civil Liberties Conference on November 3 which will tackle national security threats as well as local concerns such as searches of students and teachers plus offer training on legislative advocacy. Neighbor island meetings on conference topics are also planned for Hawaii Island and Kauai later in November. 

Public Forum: "Guantánamo and the Law" (10/04/2007)
Honolulu - A Hawaii attorney representing a detainee at Guantánamo Bay prison will be the featured speaker for the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii ("ACLU of Hawaii"). Edmund Burke begins his statewide lecture tour on "Guantánamo and the Law" on Friday October 12th at Maui Community College "Science Building 10a" from 5:30PM to 7:00PM. 

ACLU Issues Official Demand for Governor to Halt Random Drug Testing of Educators (10/04/2007)

Honolulu – The American Civil Liberties Union served Governor Lingle a formal demand letter today calling for an end to the State's plan to randomly drug test many public school employees, including teachers and librarians. The ACLU has so far been contacted by more than 150 educators seeking to challenge the random drug testing policy.

Homeless Children Denied Equal Access to Education - Civil Rights Groups Charge State With Failure in Federal Class Action Lawsuit (10/02/2007)
Honolulu – Calling the State of Hawaii's treatment of homeless children a travesty, civil rights groups and attorneys filed a class action lawsuit today challenging the State's failure to provide homeless children with equal access to public education. The lawsuit – which names three homeless parents and their children – charges State officials ("State") with ignoring their legal obligations to provide homeless children with equal access to a free and appropriate public education in violation of the McKinney-Vento Act ("Act"). The lawsuit also charges State officials with violating constitutional requirements to provide equal access to public education without regard to the status of homelessness.

ACLU Announces Legal Challenge to First-Ever Random Drug Testing Policy for Public School Educators  (09/14/2007)
Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union is convening a series of local events to announce its legal challenge to a state policy that will randomly drug test many public school employees, including teachers, librarians and many administrative workers. Saying that the drug testing program violates adults' constitutional right to privacy, is ineffective and costly, the ACLU is currently seeking Hawaii public school employees to participate in a lawsuit against the State that will soon be filed in federal court.

2007 ACLU Hawai'i Youth Award Winners Selected (06/07/2007)
Honolulu - Since 2003, the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i's Guardians of Liberty & Justice Youth Award has honored the work of young civil libertarians who have braved adversity to stand up for a constitutional principle. The awards ceremony is Saturday, July 7th, in the chambers of the Hawai'i State Supreme Court, with special guest presenter the Honorable Steven H. Levinson, Associate Justice of the Hawai'i Supreme Court. Public seating is very limited, call (808)522-5900 for information.

ACLU of Hawaii Sues University of Hawaii for Banning Free Speech and Association of a Tenured Professor (04/11/2007)
Honolulu - Calling a University of Hawaii ("University") directive blatantly unconstitutional under the First and Fourteenth Amendments, the ACLU of Hawaii today took the University to federal court to invalidate the directive.  In response to an employment grievance against Professor Michael D'Andrea, a tenured professor and outspoken political advocate, the University issued a letter banning Professor D'Andrea from having any contact in any form with all faculty members, staff and current or former students or advisees.  This communication ban  until yesterday  applied to Professor D'Andrea at all times of the day, in all places, public and private, and with regard to any and all topics, including matters of public concern.  Although the University agreed, after days of informal negotiations to limit the communication ban, the current ban still fails to comply with the Constitution.

ACLU of Hawaii at State Senate Briefing on Real ID (03/29/2007)
This joint informational briefing will outline the impact of the Real ID Act of 2005, which establishes certain standards, procedures, and requirements for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. The Real ID Act of 2005 requires states to meet federal ID standards and overhaul their motor vehicle departments by May 2008.  This unfunded mandate will cost the states an estimated $11 billion dollars in costs, time, and statutory and regulatory obstacles.

White House Pushes Controversial Student Drug Testing Agenda at Summit in Honolulu on March 27 (03/22/2007)
Honolulu, HI - The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is conducting a series of regional summits designed to convince local educators to implement across-the-board random, suspicionless student drug testing. This policy is unsupported by the available science and opposed by leading experts in adolescent health. The third summit of 2007 takes place on Tuesday, March 27th in Honolulu at the Sheraton Waikiki, 2255 Kalakaua Avenue at 8:30 a.m.

ACLU OF HAWAII VICTORIOUS IN CHALLENGE TO HONOLULU PROSECUTOR'S UNLAWFUL USE OF PUBLIC FUNDS IN POLITICAL CAMPAIGNING (03/14/2007)
HONOLULU - Claiming a victory for voter fairness on election ballot measures, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Hawaii announced that the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that Honolulu Prosecutor Peter Carlisle acted unlawfully when he used public funds and resources to advocate for a proposed constitutional amendment in a general election.
