Our mission is to protect individual freedoms guaranteed under the federal and state constitutions. In Hawai'i since 1965, the ACLU works through legal action, legislative lobbying and public education. The ACLU is a private, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization supported primarily by private donations. We are not affiliated with the government and do not accept any government funds in order to maintain our independence.

Federal Judge Rules That the State of Hawaii Department of Education Must Fulfill its Obligation to Homeless Children (02/14/2008)
Honolulu - U.S. District Court Chief Judge Helen Gillmor has ordered the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) to change its enrollment procedures to ensure equal access for homeless children. After hearing from civil rights groups and attorneys representing three homeless parents and their five children on 2/11/08, Judge Gillmor granted their motion for preliminary injunction in part and their motion to proceed as a class action.

Governor Lingle Wrong that Demise of Random Drug Testing Program Puts Teacher Pay Raise at Risk (02/01/2008)
Honolulu - A diverse group of legal and labor experts and public school educators delivered a letter to Governor Linda Lingle today demanding that she retract legally baseless threats to withhold teachers' pay raises.  In response to the Board of Education's decision last week not to divert money from Hawai'i's classrooms to fund a random teacher drug testing program, Lingle threatened to deny teachers a pay raise included in their current contract.

ACLU of Hawai'i Marks 6th Year of Detentions, Joins Nation-Wide Wear Orange" Day to Close Guantánamo - January 11th, 2008 is the 6th anniversary of prisoners arriving at the infamous "Camp X-Ray" (01/10/2008)
Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i (ACLU) joins other human rights organizations around the nation in marking January 11th, 2008 – the 6th anniversary of the arrival of prisoners at Guantánamo's notorious "Camp X-Ray". Campaign supporters are urged to wear orange – the same color as the jumpsuits issued to prisoners at the facility. From 1:00PM to 2:30PM, ACLU volunteers will raise awareness among local legislators at the State Capitol, delivering orange ribbon pins and information about Guantánamo.

ACLU of Hawaii Hails Supreme Court Decision Affirming Parents’ Rights to Raise Their Children (12/19/2007)
Honolulu - Hailing the decision as a victory for parents and families, the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii (ACLU) announced today that the Hawaii Supreme Court has struck down a law that gave the family courts overly broad power to award a grandparent visitation rights over the objections of a parent. On December 13, 2007, in Doe v. Doe, the Supreme Court upheld the Family Court’s conclusion that Hawaii’s grandparent visitation statute is unconstitutional as written because it unnecessarily interferes with a parent’s fundamental right to raise her child.

ACLU of Hawai'i Celebrates National Bill of Rights Day!
Copies of the Bill of Rights Available Free to Public, Friday 12/14/07

Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i is offering free copies of the Bill of Rights in celebration of Bill of Rights Day, marking the 216th anniversary of its ratification (since Bill of Rights Day falls on a Saturday this year, the ACLU will offer free copies to the public Friday, December 14).

ACLU of Hawaii Welcomes New Senior Staff Attorney Daniel M. Gluck (12/04/2007)
Honolulu - The ACLU of Hawaii is pleased to announce that it has selected Daniel M. Gluck as its new Senior Staff Attorney. Gluck joins the ACLU of Hawaii legal team, which is currently staffed by Lois Perrin, Legal Director, and Laurie A. Temple, Staff Attorney.

Gov. Lingle Refuses to Retract Teacher Drug Testing Policy - Calling the Policy Unconstitutional, ACLU Announces Plans to File Suit Imminently (11/15/2007)
Honolulu - The American Civil Liberties Union condemned Governor Lingle's refusal to retract a policy that will subject as many as 13,500 public school employees, including teachers, librarians and many administrative workers to random drug testing. Saying that the drug testing program violates adults' constitutional right to privacy and is ineffective and costly, the ACLU announced today that it will file suit imminently in federal court.
